Description
Pick up a sack of supermarket wild bird seed and read the label. Most of it is milo, wheat and cracked corn — cheap grains that the birds you actually want to see will kick straight out of the feeder onto the grass, where it sprouts, moulds, and draws rats.
These four Volkman blends have between two and six ingredients each. No filler, no colours, no preservatives. You pay more per pound and you throw away far less, which usually works out cheaper per bird.

Those fat levels look startling next to a pet bird food, and they should. A wild bird in winter is burning energy to stay warm through the night; fat is the point of the exercise.
Getting the most out of a feeder
- Keep it clean. Mouldy seed and dirty feeders spread disease through a garden flock. Scrub and dry every couple of weeks, more often in wet weather.
- Do not overfill. Put out what gets eaten in a few days. Seed that sits gets damp and goes off.
- Place it thoughtfully — either within about 3 feet of a window or more than 30 feet from it. The middle distance is where birds build up enough speed to be hurt by a collision.
- Give them cover. A shrub within ten feet or so means birds will actually use the feeder rather than sitting exposed.
- Water matters as much as food, and in a hard frost it matters more.

Which stops the mess under the feeder?
No-Waste. Every ingredient is hull-free, so there is nothing to drop.
How do I keep squirrels off?
Safflower helps — squirrels and grackles generally leave it alone while cardinals, finches and chickadees eat it happily. Garden Mix and Superior Blend both contain it. A baffle on the pole does the rest.
Why won't finches use my feeder?
Usually the seed or the feeder. Goldfinches want nyjer and shelled sunflower from a tube or mesh feeder — Wild Finch Mix is exactly that, and nothing else.
Is it cheaper to buy the big cheap bag?
Per pound, yes. Per pound the birds actually eat, usually not — you are paying to sweep milo off your lawn.
Can my pet bird eat this?
No. These are high-fat outdoor energy feeds, not a balanced diet for a caged bird.
