There are two kinds of people with bird feeders: the ones fighting a war against squirrels and the ones who gave up and started feeding them. This is for the second group — and, quietly, it is also the most effective squirrel deterrent there is. A squirrel with its own food source spends considerably less time hanging upside down off your bird feeder.

Seven ingredients, nothing else: corn, mixed feed nuts, sunflower seeds, in-shell peanuts, in-shell almonds, in-shell pumpkin seed and safflower oil. No colours, no preservatives.

Why in-shell nuts

This is the part that actually matters. A squirrel's incisors grow continuously and it has to gnaw to keep them worn down — shelled nuts vanish in seconds and do nothing for its teeth. In-shell nuts make the animal work, which is better for it and far more entertaining to watch. Volkman say this blend is designed to entice more than just squirrels, and in practice jays, woodpeckers and chipmunks find it too.

Where to put it

Well away from the bird feeders — that is the whole strategy. A squirrel feeder, a flat platform or simply a spot on a stump or fence post, thirty feet or more from where the birds eat. Put out what gets taken in a day or two; a pile of nuts left in the rain goes mouldy, and mouldy nuts are bad for wildlife.

Feeding wildlife is not legal or advisable everywhere — check your local rules, and do not feed where it will draw animals across a road.

Won't feeding them attract more squirrels?
You already have the squirrels. What changes is where they spend their time, and most people find the bird feeder gets a good deal more peace.

Can birds eat it?
Jays, woodpeckers and crows certainly will. Small songbirds cannot manage in-shell nuts.

Is it safe for chipmunks and other wildlife?
It is nuts, corn and seed — ordinary food for a great many species. It is not a formulated diet for any of them, so treat it as a supplement to what they forage themselves.

How long does 4 lb last?
Depends entirely on how many squirrels you have. A couple of weeks for one or two; considerably less if word gets around.
