Description
A guinea pig in a hutch with a bowl of pellets has nothing to do. In the wild it would spend most of its waking hours working through grass looking for something better.
Berrie-Bale is a compressed bale of high-fibre western timothy hay with mint Hey!Berries hidden through it. The animal has to pull the bale apart to find them — which means it eats a great deal of hay on the way, wears its teeth down doing it, and is occupied for an afternoon instead of five minutes.
The hay is grown pesticide-free on Lafeber's family farm in the north-western United States.
Who it is for
Mature guinea pigs. Lafeber are explicit that it is not intended for growing, active, pregnant or nursing guinea pigs — those have higher energy and calcium needs and want a diet built for that.

Fresh hay and clean water always available. Lafeber do not publish an absolute grams-per-day figure.
Why the teeth matter
Guinea pig teeth grow continuously for life. Without enough long-fibre chewing they overgrow, the molars trap the tongue, and the animal stops eating — a common and genuinely miserable problem, and an expensive one to fix. Hay is the treatment and the prevention, and anything that makes a guinea pig eat more hay is doing real work.

The calcium ceiling is deliberate — guinea pigs are prone to bladder stones and excess dietary calcium is part of the picture.

Questions we get asked
Why does vitamin C matter so much?
Guinea pigs, like humans and unlike almost every other pet, cannot make their own. Without a dietary source they develop scurvy. Vitamin C also degrades in storage, which is why a fresh bag matters and why fresh vegetables should stay in the diet.
Can my rabbit have it?
Lafeber make a rabbit version. Rabbits do not need supplemental vitamin C, so buy the one made for the species.
Does this replace hay?
No. It is 50% of the diet, with 40% loose fresh hay alongside. Guinea pigs need the sheer bulk of long-strand hay.
My guinea pig ignores it.
Take the loose hay away for an hour so the bale is the only option, and put it where the animal already likes to sit. Most work it out quickly.
