Morning Bird Herbal & Mineral Supplements

Three liquid supplements aimed at specific, well-recognised gaps in a captive bird's life. All are given by drop, and all are supplements rather than medicines — none of them treat, cure or prevent disease, and a bird showing symptoms needs a vet rather than a bottle.

Milk Thistle & Dandelion — 1 fl oz

An alcohol-free herbal glycerite of organic milk thistle seed and organic dandelion root, traditionally used to support normal liver function.

The reason it sells is straightforward: a high-fat seed diet is hard on a bird's liver, and fatty liver disease is common in captive Amazons, budgies and cockatiels. Owners of seed-addicted birds often add this while they work on the diet — which is the real fix. The supplement supports; it does not substitute for getting the bird onto a better diet, and it does not treat liver disease. If your bird has been diagnosed with a liver problem, your avian vet should be directing what goes into it.

Dosing, twice daily: 8 drops in 8 fl oz of water, or 8 drops on 8 oz of soft food, or direct by mouth — 1 drop for a small bird (finch, budgie), 2 for a medium (grey, Amazon), 3 for a large (macaw, cockatoo).

Joint & Mobility — 1 fl oz

An alcohol-free herbal glycerite formulated for older and less active birds, traditionally used to support joint comfort and normal mobility. Parrots live a long time and a great many of them develop stiffness in later life.

Ingredients: organic extracts of alfalfa leaf, stinging nettle leaf, corn silk, devil's claw root, horsetail stem, fenugreek seed, yucca root and black walnut hulls, in organic vegetable glycerin and distilled water. No alcohol.

A bird in pain needs veterinary pain relief. Arthritis in birds is diagnosable and treatable, and a herbal supplement is not a substitute for that. Talk to your avian vet about this alongside a proper assessment — and mention it, because herbs can interact with medication.

Dosing, twice daily: 8 drops in 8 fl oz of water, or 8 drops on 8 oz of soft food, or direct by mouth — 1 drop (small), 2 drops (medium), 3 drops (large).

Liquid Iodine — 2 fl oz

A single-purpose potassium iodide supplement, 750 mg/L, for iodine-deficient birds — supporting normal thyroid function.

This one has a genuine and well-established use in aviculture. Seed-only diets are commonly low in iodine, and iodine deficiency is a recognised problem in budgies and Gouldian finches in particular. Morning Bird list the signs it addresses: difficult moults, poor feather condition, inactivity, poor breeding and balding in Gouldian finches.

Dosing: one drop per ounce of clean drinking water, daily, as the bird's only source of drinking water. Safe for young and adult birds.

A bird with laboured breathing needs a vet the same day, not a supplement. Iodine deficiency is one possible cause among many, and the serious ones move quickly.
