Higgins inTune Complete & Balanced Bird Food

inTune is Higgins' extruded daily diet, and the thing that sets it apart on a shelf is what is not in it: no artificial preservatives, no artificial flavours, no chemical dyes. The colour comes from annatto, turmeric and beet juice; the flavour from real banana, pineapple and citrus.

It comes in four kibble shapes — a leaf, a circle, a heart and a pineapple — which is partly whimsy and partly practical: a bird that sees four different things in the bowl stays interested for longer than one looking at four hundred identical brown pellets.

Each nugget carries protected probiotics (Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. casei), balanced omega-3 and omega-6, and stabilised vitamins C and E.

Conure & Cockatiel and Parrot: ground corn, brown rice, soybean meal, ground wheat, oat meal, sugar, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), dicalcium phosphate, dried egg product, flaxseed, calcium carbonate, alfalfa nutrient concentrate, salt, cranberries, apples, blueberries, celery, beets, parsley, lettuce, spinach, watercress, brewer's dried yeast, DL-methionine, L-lysine, choline chloride, algae meal, mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, potassium chloride, yeast extract, L-carnitine, a full vitamin and chelated mineral pack, colour added (annatto extract, turmeric, beet juice), natural banana, pineapple and citrus flavour, and the three dried probiotic fermentation products.

Lory is a different recipe entirely — rice flour, whole wheat flour, fructose, sugar, soy protein concentrate, dried milk, coconut oil, apple flakes, dried honey, carrot flakes, hibiscus flower, spirulina, dandelion leaf, milk thistle seed, eucalyptus, bell peppers and papaya leaf, with the vitamin, mineral and probiotic pack. No corn.

How to feed it

Higgins' own direction: "inTune is formulated as a complete and balanced food to be fed free-choice to your pet birds. Birds can consume as much as 20% of their body weight per day so make sure plenty of inTune is provided and is fresh every day. Provide plenty of clean water daily. No supplements are necessary and are not recommended. If fruits, nuts or other foods are provided, make sure inTune is at least 90% of the overall diet by weight."

The Lory powder is different. Dry: fill a clean dish with 4–6 tablespoons per bird. As nectar: mix 3–4 tablespoons with 4 oz of clean water, adjusting to your bird's preference. Discard unused food daily, and take nectar away within an hour — it is a sugar solution in a warm room, and it spoils exactly as fast as you would expect.

Questions we get asked

inTune or inTune Harmony?
This is the plain extruded diet — nuggets only, meant to be 90% or more of what the bird eats. Harmony is the same base with real dried fruit, nuts and vegetables blended in, so food and treat arrive in one bag. Harmony is easier to sell to a fussy bird; this one is cleaner nutritionally because there is nothing to pick around.

Why four shapes?
Higgins say the shapes signify natural ingredients, wellness, good health and real fruit. The practical effect is visual variety in the bowl, which matters more to a parrot than it sounds.

Do I need to add vitamins?
Higgins explicitly say no, and that supplements are not recommended. It is a complete diet.

Can I feed the parrot nugget to my cockatiel?
Physically it is large for a cockatiel. Stay with the size made for the bird.
