Oven Fresh Bites Classic Baked Bird Food

Almost every pellet on the market is extruded — the mix is forced through a die under heat and pressure and comes out as uniform lozenges. Oven Fresh Bites are baked, in small batches, and the difference is visible the moment you open the bag: you can see the grains.

Caitec's published reasoning is that natural leavening breaks down the indigestible parts of the grain and develops the flavour of whole grains without added sweeteners, oils, preservatives or yeast, and that the larger grain particles may improve nutrient retention and digestion. The texture comes out semi-crunchy rather than hard.

Small Birds: oatmeal, oat flour, white millet flour, sunflower meal, sunflower oil, glycerine, dried egg product, wheat germ meal, lentils, barley flour, peanut meal, natural flavours, dicalcium phosphate, carrots, red bell peppers, alfalfa meal, marigold meal, calcium carbonate, peas, blueberries, apples, L-lysine, L-threonine, DL-methionine, chelated zinc, manganese, iron and copper, sodium chloride, choline chloride, vitamin E, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, wheat meal, yucca extract, silicon dioxide, potassium iodide, and the full B-complex plus vitamins A, D3 and K.

Medium and Large follow the same base with soybean meal, sunflower kernels, peanuts, freeze-dried papaya, banana chips, cranberries and cayenne pepper added.

How to feed it

Caitec position it as the primary diet at about 75% of daily intake, with fresh fruit and vegetables at 10–15% and nuts and seeds at 5–10%. Feed fresh daily and keep clean water available.

Baked or extruded — does it matter?

Honestly: less than the marketing on either side suggests. A bird's diet is made or broken by whether it eats the food, not by the manufacturing process. Where baking genuinely helps is with the birds that reject pellets on texture — a semi-crunchy nugget with visible grain behaves differently in the beak from a hard extruded one, and some birds that will not touch a pellet will eat these.

Caitec themselves do not make a direct "baked beats extruded" claim, and we are not going to make one for them.

My bird refuses pellets.
This is one of the better things to try. The texture is different enough that it reads as a new food rather than the thing the bird has already rejected.

Why cayenne pepper in the larger sizes?
Birds do not experience chilli heat — they lack the receptor mammals have. It adds interest, and it is a common inclusion in parrot food for exactly that reason.
