Description
An Avi-Cake is a square of whole premium seed pressed roughly half-and-half with balanced pellets and held together with a molasses binder. Lafeber call it a "work-and-chew" food, and the description is exact — a bird cannot hoover it up. It has to plant a foot on it, get a grip, and break pieces off.
That is the argument for it. A bowl of pellets is gone in four minutes. An Avi-Cake occupies a parrot, and an occupied parrot is a quieter, less destructive, less frustrated one.

Worth noticing: at 4.5% fat the Small Bird and Parrot cakes are among the leanest foods Lafeber make. The Macaw version is a different animal at 7.5%.
Ingredients
Parrot: corn, canary grass seed, white proso millet, hulled oats, soybean meal, sucrose, wheat flour, cane molasses, gelatin, red millet, peanuts, glycerin, ground limestone, dicalcium phosphate, dried whole egg, canola oil, ground rice, iodised salt, DL-methionine, citric acid, and a full stabilised vitamin and mineral pack.
The Small Bird cake leads on canary grass seed and soybean meal; the Macaw cake leads on corn and safflower. Non-GMO formula.
How much to feed
Lafeber do not publish a per-day quantity for Avi-Cakes — we would rather tell you that than invent a number. In practice most owners give a small bird part of a cake a day and a large parrot one, adjusting to the bird. Weigh weekly on a gram scale and let the trend decide. Whatever you feed as the base, greens, vegetables and some fruit should be around 20% of the daily diet.
Using it to move a bird onto pellets
Because an Avi-Cake is about half pellet already, a seed-addicted bird that eats one is eating far more pellet than it realises. It is one of the gentler routes across, and it does not require the bird to accept anything that looks like a pellet.

Is this a treat or a meal?
A complete diet. Lafeber are explicit that Nutri-Berries, Avi-Cakes, Pellet-Berries and pellets are all nutritionally balanced.
Molasses and sucrose — is that a lot of sugar?
They are the binder that holds the cake together, in small amounts. There is more sugar in a single grape than in a day's Avi-Cake.
My bird just sits on it.
Try wedging it between cage bars or in a skewer rather than leaving it in a bowl. A cake that fights back gets eaten; one lying flat gets ignored.
Avi-Cakes or Nutri-Berries?
Same nutrition, different shape. Nutri-Berries are loose round berries. Avi-Cakes are a pressed square that takes longer to get into. Birds that bore easily usually do better on the cakes.
