Every other flavoured bird food is sweet. El Paso is the one that is not.

Lafeber build it around human-grade red and green bell peppers with cayenne pepper and spices, in the same hulled-seed, vitamin-coated berry as the rest of the range. For a bird that has eaten sweet fruit berries for two years and started losing interest, a savoury one is a genuine change rather than another variation on the same note.

Is chilli safe for a bird?

Yes — and this is worth understanding rather than just trusting. Capsaicin, the compound that makes chilli burn, binds to a receptor that mammals have and birds do not. A parrot tastes the pepper but feels no heat. It is the reason chilli is added to wild bird seed to keep squirrels off it without troubling the birds, and the reason wild parrots eat hot peppers freely.

Wash your hands after handling it. Your receptors work perfectly well.

How much to feed

Lafeber's published guidance: small parrots 10 berries at a time, medium parrots 15, large parrots 20. Fresh food and water always available; greens, vegetables and some fruit at around 20% of the daily diet. It is a complete diet — you can feed it as the base.

Questions we get asked

Will my bird's droppings change colour?
Possibly, mildly — bell pepper pigment. If you are ever unsure whether what you are looking at is pigment or blood, ring your avian vet rather than talk yourself out of it.

My bird hates sweet food.
Then this is the one to try. A surprising number of birds that snub Tropical Fruit will take El Paso straight away.

Is it too spicy to feed every day?
No. Birds do not experience it as spicy, and Lafeber formulate it as a complete daily diet.

Can I mix it with the Classic berries?
Yes. Half and half is a good way to introduce it if your bird is suspicious of anything new.
