Lafeber Tropical Fruit Gourmet Pellets Bird Food

Most fruit-flavoured bird pellets get their sweetness from added sugar. Lafeber's claim for this line is that it is the only fruit pellet made exclusively with the natural sweetness of fruit — no sugar or fructose added. The pineapple, papaya and mango in the bag are real dried fruit, and you can see the pieces.

It matters more than it sounds. Pellets are the diet every avian vet recommends and the diet most birds refuse. A pellet a bird will actually eat is worth more than a better pellet it will not.

Feeding amounts — per day, by species

This is the only Lafeber bird food with published per-day quantities, so use them:

Keep pellets available all day in a clean dish, with fresh water always. Fresh fruit and vegetables should be around 20% of the total diet.

Ingredients

Corn, soybean meal, dried fruit (pineapple, papaya, mango), wheat flour, ground oats, canola oil, dicalcium phosphate, ground limestone, ground rice, iodised salt, citric acid, DL-methionine, L-lysine, choline chloride, and a full stabilised vitamin and chelated mineral pack (A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C, D3, E, beta-carotene, copper methionine chelate, manganous oxide, zinc oxide, sodium selenite).

Lafeber state non-GMO, human-grade ingredients, no artificial colours, preservatives or flavours, made in small batches on the family farm in rural Illinois. The line traces back to a 1973 formula by Dr Lafeber.

Pellets or Nutri-Berries?

Lafeber's own answer is that the nutrition is the same and the difference is structural: "the ingredients in pellets are all ground up, and the ingredients in the other diets are whole." A pellet is quicker to eat and easier to measure. A Nutri-Berry takes longer and gives the bird something to do. Many households buy both and use the pellet as the measured daily diet with berries as enrichment.

Questions we get asked

Will the fruit make my bird fat?
No added sugar, and 3.4–4% fat. This is a lean food.

My bird eats around the fruit pieces.
The fruit is baked into the pellet rather than sitting loose, so there is nothing to pick out. If crumbs are being left, feed the measured amount rather than a full bowl.

Can I switch straight from another pellet?
Usually yes, and most birds take it within a week. Weigh daily through any diet change.

Which size?
The 1 lb or 1.25 lb bag for one small bird. The 4 lb for a large parrot or several birds. Pellets go stale — buy what you will finish in two months.
