Obesity is one of the commonest health problems in pet birds and one of the least talked about. An Amazon or a budgie fed on sunflower-heavy seed, in a cage, with no flying to do, puts weight on the way anyone would — and it shortens its life through fatty liver disease long before anyone notices.

Low-Fat Maintenance is Roudybush's answer: the same complete diet as Daily Maintenance with the fat cut from a 6% minimum to a 2% minimum and a 5% ceiling, and the fibre tightened. It is for adult birds that are not laying eggs or feeding chicks and that tend to carry too much weight.

Talk to your avian vet first. A bird losing weight is not always a bird getting healthier, and some of what looks like fat is not. Get the diagnosis before you change the diet.

Guaranteed analysis

For comparison, Daily Maintenance runs 11% protein and a 6% fat minimum. The protein is slightly higher here and the fat considerably lower — the usual shape of a weight-management diet.

Feeding

Feed as the complete diet. Do not add vitamin or mineral supplements — no cuttlebone, no mineral block. Fresh fruit and vegetables as a minor part of the diet only; with a weight-management bird, the treats are usually where the problem is.

Roudybush publish one specific mix: for a chronic egg-layer or a bird prone to low calcium, such as an African grey, combine one third Breeder with two thirds Low-Fat. Do that under veterinary direction.

Questions we get asked

How do I know my bird is overweight?
A gram scale and an avian vet, not a look. Birds hide condition under feathers, and the keel bone assessment that tells you the answer is something to be shown how to do.

How fast should a bird lose weight?
Slowly, and under supervision. Rapid weight loss in a bird is dangerous — it can tip into hepatic lipidosis, which is the very thing you are trying to prevent.

Can I feed this long term?
Yes, it is a complete maintenance diet. Whether your particular bird should be on it long term is a question for your vet.

Is it the same pellet, just smaller portions?
No — it is a genuinely different formula. Cutting portions of a normal diet cuts the vitamins and minerals too; this cuts the fat and keeps the rest.
