Roudybush Nectar 3 Hummingbird Diet 2 lb

Roudybush Nectar 3 is a 3% protein maintenance diet for adult hummingbirds. It is a specialist product, used in aviculture and in licensed wildlife rehabilitation rather than in a garden.

This is explicitly not for use in a hummingbird feeder. Roudybush state that plainly, and it matters — a formulated nectar containing protein and fat is a different thing from the plain sugar-water a garden feeder should hold, and it spoils far faster in the sun.

Which nectar for which bird

Roudybush make one nectar family at three protein levels, and the number is the protein:

All three are formulated lower in sugar than competitor nectars — Roudybush tie this to reducing the yeast infections that nectar-feeding birds are prone to on high-sugar diets.

If you feed garden hummingbirds

You do not need this product, and you should not use it. The accepted mix for a garden feeder is one part plain white sugar to four parts water, with no dye, no honey and no commercial nectar. Change it every two days in warm weather, every day above 90°F, and scrub the feeder each time — fermented nectar and feeder mould are a genuine cause of death in wild hummingbirds.

What Roudybush publish, and what they do not

Roudybush publish the protein level and the intended use for Nectar 3, but not a full guaranteed analysis or ingredient list. We are not going to invent one. The panel is printed on the bag, and if you need the numbers before ordering — as a rehabilitator or a breeder reasonably might — ask us and we will get them from the manufacturer.

For reference, the sibling Lory Diet (Nectar 15) lists 15% protein, 3.5% fat, 0.5% fibre and 12% moisture, built on sucrose and soy protein isolate with a full vitamin and mineral pack. Nectar 3 is the same family at a lower protein level.

Questions we get asked

Can I use this in my garden feeder?
No. Roudybush say so on the label. Plain 1:4 sugar water is what a garden feeder wants.

I found an injured hummingbird.
Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator today. Hummingbirds have hours, not days, of reserve, and in most US states it is illegal to keep one without a permit.

Is 2 lb too much?
For a single bird, yes — this is sized for aviculture and rehabilitation. Keep it sealed, cool and dry.

Which one for a lorikeet?
Neither of the hummingbird nectars. Lories and lorikeets want the Lory Diet at 15% protein — or Roudybush pellets, which they will take and which give noticeably drier droppings.
