Roudybush Senior Diet raises the calcium, protein, vitamins and trace minerals above the maintenance formula. It is intended for three groups Roudybush name specifically: older birds, African greys, and weaning chicks.

Read this next bit before you buy. Roudybush themselves advise consulting an avian vet before switching, because the elevated levels "may not be appropriate for all birds". That is unusually cautious labelling for a bird food, and it is worth taking at face value. An older bird with kidney disease, for instance, does not want more protein — it wants less. Get the bird looked at, then choose the diet.

Why African greys get named

Greys are prone to low blood calcium — hypocalcaemia — in a way most other parrots are not, and the consequences run to seizures. It is one of the reasons Roudybush build extra calcium into more than one formula and publish mixing ratios for grey owners. If you keep a grey, this is a conversation to have with your vet rather than a decision to make from a product page.

Ingredients

Soy meal, ground corn, ground wheat, soy oil, alfalfa, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, L-lysine, DL-methionine, L-arginine, plus vitamins and minerals including D3, E, A and the B-complex. No artificial colours.

Roudybush make Senior Diet in Mini, Small and Medium only. Same formula in each; pick by beak size.

Feeding

Feed as the complete diet. No additional vitamin or mineral supplements — this formula is already elevated, and adding more on top is how a bird ends up with a different problem. Fresh fruit and vegetables as a minor part of the diet. Store cool and dry.

Questions we get asked

How old is "senior"?
It depends entirely on the species — a cockatiel at twelve and a macaw at forty are in comparable places. Behaviour and condition tell you more than a number: slowing down, perching more carefully, changes in weight.

Why is a weaning chick on the same diet as an old bird?
Because both need more than maintenance. The elevated protein, calcium and minerals serve growth in one and maintenance of an ageing body in the other.

Can I just feed it and skip the vet?
You can, but Roudybush's own advice is not to, and we would rather repeat that than sell you a bag. An older bird is exactly the animal most likely to have something going on that changes the right answer.

Senior Diet or High-Energy Breeder for a weaning bird?
Roudybush name both. High-Energy Breeder is the richer one and is aimed at the first one to three months after weaning specifically.
