Volkman Featherglow Bird Food 4 lb

Featherglow is Volkman's top tier, and the difference from their Avian Science seed range is concrete rather than marketing.

Vitaminised pellets are blended through the seed. So the fortification is in the mix itself rather than sprayed onto a seed the bird will hull and discard. Three of the four blends also carry Featherglow Eggfood and live probiotic cultures — Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. casei. That is the thing a plain seed mix cannot give you.

Volkman has been milling in California's Central Valley since 1863 and is still family owned. Bags are CO₂-flushed and date-coded; 18 months from packing, kept sealed and cool.

Which one for your bird

Note that Featherglow segments by bird size where Avian Science splits twelve ways by species. If you want the mix matched precisely to an eclectus or a parrotlet, look at Avian Science. If you want the fortification, look here.

Guaranteed analysis

Featherglow Parakeet is missing from that table deliberately. Volkman's site currently lists it at 9.25% protein — the same block it shows for Birdie's Buffet — and that does not match a mix containing millet, canary seed, sunflower, safflower, nyjer, peanuts, eggfood and vitamin pellets, which should come out around 13%. It reads as a copy-and-paste error on their page, so we have left it out rather than print a figure we think is wrong. The panel on the bag is authoritative, and we will publish the corrected number when Volkman confirm it.

Ingredients

Large Parrot, as the fullest example: safflower seed, sunflower seed, corn, hulled pumpkin seed, papaya, banana, in-shell peanuts, mixed feed nuts, buckwheat, oat groats, dried apple, dehydrated carrot, in-shell almonds, dehydrated peas, peppers, coconut, orange oil, safflower oil — plus the pellet component (soybean meal, corn gluten meal, soybean oil, DL-methionine, maltodextrin, choline chloride, L-lysine, dicalcium phosphate, magnesium oxide, betaine, silicon dioxide, vitamins A, D, E, B12 and C, chelated minerals, niacin, yucca schidigera extract, calcium pantothenate, sodium selenite, calcium iodate, riboflavin, biotin, pyridoxine, thiamine, cobalt sulfate, folic acid) — then sun-cured apricot, nectarine, pineapple, raisins, cranberries and peaches, sunflower oil, citric acid, calcium, banana flavour, sugar, natural and artificial flavours, FD&C Red No. 40, Blue No. 1, Yellow No. 5 and No. 6, sulfur dioxide as a preservative.

Worth saying plainly: these blends contain FD&C food colouring. If that matters to you, Volkman's Soak & Simmer, Gourmet Eggfood and their wild bird mixes carry no artificial colour at all, and we sell all of them.

Feeding

Volkman publish only "feed free choice", with fresh clean water always available. As a practical starting point, bird specialists commonly suggest around 1½–2 tablespoons a day for a budgie, 2–3 for a cockatiel or conure, and ¼–½ cup for a large parrot — but that is retailer guidance, not Volkman's, and the honest answer is to weigh your bird weekly and adjust.

A seed diet works best alongside fresh vegetables. Ask your avian vet whether a formulated pellet should be part of the picture too — for many birds it should.

Featherglow for the vitamin pellets, eggfood and probiotics. Avian Science for a blend matched to a specific species. Featherglow also covers cooked foods, treats and eggfood, which Avian Science does not.

My bird eats round the pellets.
Common at first. Feed slightly less at a time so there is less to sort through, and give it a fortnight.

Do the probiotics survive in a dry bag?
Volkman list dried fermentation products, which are shelf-stable in a sealed bag. Keep it cool and sealed and use it inside the 18-month date code.

How long does 4 lb last?
About two months for one cockatiel; two to three weeks for a large parrot.
