Eggfood is one of those products every breeder owns and most pet owners have never heard of. It is a soft, protein-rich, easily digested conditioning food — and it is what parent birds actually feed to nestlings, because a chick cannot eat hard seed.

Volkman position this for medium to large hookbills during the demanding parts of life: growth, feather regrowth, stress, breeding, moulting and chick weaning. It supplies protein, energy and essential amino acids at the moments a bird is short of all three.

When breeders use it

• Before pairing — in the weeks running up to breeding, to bring birds into condition.
• Through incubation and rearing — the parents pass soft food to the chicks.
• Through the moult — growing a full set of feathers is a serious protein demand, and a bird in heavy moult that is short of it grows poor feathers.
• Newly weaned or stressed birds — after a move, an illness, or a change of home.

It is a supplement, not a diet. Feed it alongside the bird's normal food, not instead of it.

One of the two clean labels in the range

Most Volkman seed blends contain FD&C colouring. This one does not. It is preserved with mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract and green tea extract rather than sulphites, and carries no artificial colour at all — which matters to a good many bird owners, and is the honest reason to pick it out.

It also carries three live-culture probiotics: Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. casei.

Feeding

Volkman publish "feed free choice", with fresh clean water always available, and store cool and dry. In practice most breeders offer a small dish daily through the conditioning and rearing period and take it away after a couple of hours — it is a soft food and it spoils.

Questions we get asked

I don't breed. Is there any point?
Yes — through a heavy moult, after an illness, or for a newly rehomed bird settling in. Those are all conditions where extra protein in a form the bird will actually eat helps.

Can I mix it with water?
Many people dampen it slightly, which makes it more appealing and closer to what a parent bird would deliver. Make it fresh and remove it within a couple of hours.

Is it safe for small birds?
Volkman aim it at medium to large hookbills, but eggfood as a category is fed across the board, including to canaries and finches. Ask your avian vet if you are unsure about your species.

How long does 2 lb last?
As a daily supplement for one or two birds, several months. Keep it sealed and cool.
