Description
Balsa is the wood in the middle. Harder than sola, so it lasts more than an afternoon. Far softer than pine or hardwood, so a cockatiel or a conure can actually make progress on it — which is the difference between a toy that gets used and a toy that gets ignored.
Super Bird Creations list balsa among the woods they consider bird-safe, alongside pine, birch, maple and sola, and colour it with food-grade colorants.

Why chewing matters
It is not just entertainment. A parrot's beak grows continuously and chewing keeps it in shape; so does the foot and jaw work of holding a toy still while working on it. Super Bird Creations put chewing alongside foraging and preening as the three things their range is built around, and the reasoning is the same in each case — captivity removes work the bird evolved to do, and the time it frees up shows up as screaming, plucking or aggression.
A bird that has reduced a balsa tower to splinters has done a job. That is the point.
How long should it last?
Days for a determined conure, weeks for a gentle cockatiel, an afternoon for a cockatoo that has decided to concentrate. If your bird destroys balsa too fast to be economical, move up to pine or hardwood; if it cannot dent it, move down to sola.
Safety
Fasten with quick links or pear links only — never split rings, spring clips or shower rings. Supervise the first time. Replace a toy once it is chewed back to the hardware, and check it when you change the water.
Super Bird Creations recommend keeping four to six toys in the cage and rotating weekly rather than leaving the same ones up permanently.
