Description
Large parrots are not simply bigger versions of small ones. A macaw's bite is measured in hundreds of pounds per square inch, and a toy sized for a conure is a five-minute snack. These are the ones built to take it.
They are also, deliberately, meant to be destroyed. A cockatoo that reduces a toy to matchwood in two days has not broken it — it has used it. The mistake is buying something indestructible; a bird that cannot make a mark on a toy stops caring about it.

Buying toys for a big parrot without going broke
Three things make the difference:
- Rotate. Super Bird Creations recommend four to six toys and a weekly swap. A toy put away for a fortnight is new again, and you get three times the life out of the same money.
- Refill rather than replace. Several of these take cardboard bagels, paper fingers or seed pushed into the gaps. We sell the refill packs separately, and they cost a fraction of a whole toy.
- Mix hard and soft. A cage of hardwood gets ignored; a cage of cardboard lasts a day. Run both, and a stainless steel bell as the thing that never wears out.
Safety
Hardware matters more with a big bird, because a big bird will find the weak point. Super Bird Creations are explicit: use quick links or pear links, and "do not use split key rings, spring loaded clips or metal shower rings."
Check rope daily and trim or discard it when it frays — long loose strands wrap around toes. Supervise a new toy the first time, and take a toy down once it is chewed back to the hardware.

Their reasoning is worth knowing: a wild parrot spends around 70% of its day food-seeking, and a captive one does not. Their own guidance notes that birds with a variety of toys are "less self-absorbed and exhibit fewer negative behaviors" — which in practice means less screaming, less plucking and less aggression.
