Description
If you have a small bird, or a gentle one, hardwood toys are a waste of money. The bird cannot make a dent in it, loses interest, and you conclude it does not like toys.
Sola is the answer to that problem.
What sola actually is
Sola — also called sholapith — is the dried stem wood of Aeschynomene aspera, a marsh legume that grows in Bengal, Assam, Odisha and the Deccan. It is among the lightest woods in the world, lighter than cork: milky white, spongy, and soft enough that a budgie can tear it.
Three things follow from that, and they are the whole reason it is used for bird toys:
- A small beak can destroy it. Which is what a bird wants. Destruction is the reward.
- It shreds into satisfying fibres rather than splintering — closer to stripping bark than to gnawing a block.
- It is porous, so seeds and small treats can be pushed inside, turning any sola toy into a foraging toy.
It is non-toxic, all-natural and unprocessed.

Honest expectations
Sola toys do not last. That is not a defect — it is the product working. A bird that reduces a sola ball to fluff in an afternoon has had an excellent afternoon, and the alternative is a hardwood block sitting untouched for a year.
Budget for sola as a consumable, the way you budget for food. Buying the multi-packs is the cheap way to do it.
Turning any of these into a foraging toy
Push a few seeds or a small piece of nut into the sola. The bird smells it, works for it, and the toy suddenly has a point beyond destruction. This is the single easiest foraging upgrade there is, and it costs nothing.
Safety
Fasten with quick links or pear links only — never split rings, spring clips or shower rings. Supervise a new toy the first time you give it. Replace sola when it is chewed down to the hardware.
