Description
Bird toys are expensive because a bird destroys them. The way round that is not to buy fewer toys — it is to stop replacing the whole toy when the bird has only eaten the shreddable bits.
Super Bird Creations sell their own components in bulk for exactly this: "for use in rebuilding toys or creating your own bird toy designs." Thread new bagels onto the chain, push fresh pine blocks onto the wire, re-stuff the seagrass. The hardware you already paid for keeps working.

Building your own toys — what to use and what not to
If you are going to assemble toys yourself, Super Bird Creations' published guidance is the right starting point and it is short:
- Hardware: quick links or pear links. "Do not use split key rings, spring loaded clips or metal shower rings to fasten your toys." Those three account for most toy-related injuries.
- Rope: natural fibre only — cotton, hemp, jute or sisal, never synthetic blends. Keep strands short, and tie the toy close to the bars.
- Wood: pine, balsa, birch, maple and sola are the woods they name as safe.
- Colour: food colouring or vegetable dyes.
- Leather: vegetable-tanned only. Chrome-tanned leather is not bird-safe.
- Size: too small is a choking hazard, too large is an entrapment hazard. Match the bird.
And the rule that applies whether you built it or bought it: check rope toys daily, cut back or discard them when they fray.
The economics
A large parrot getting through a cardboard toy a week is an expensive parrot. The same bird getting through 200 bagels threaded onto hardware you already own is a much cheaper one — and the bird cannot tell the difference, because the part it wanted was always the destruction.
